Ian Dougherty-Moore,Stephen Decatur Middle School Mourns Ian Dougherty-Moore passed away following a medical condition
The Stephen Decatur Middle School community is navigating a profound loss this week. School administrators informed students and staff that eighth-grader Ian Dougherty-Moore passed away following a medical condition that led to an accident at home.
In the midst of their grief, Ian’s family made a courageous and generous decision: Ian would continue his legacy of kindness by becoming an organ donor. His “Path of Honor,” a final act of selfless giving, was carried out today at Barnes Children’s Hospital, offering hope and healing to others in need.

Recognizing the deep impact of this loss, the school immediately mobilized support. The district’s Flight Team, a crisis response unit, was on-site, joined by counselors from Pawprint Ministries. Together, they provided comfort and a safe space for grieving students and staff. This support team will return Tuesday morning to ensure continued care.
As the school remembers Ian, a consistent portrait emerges: a funny, kind, and friendly boy who was also a “good salesman” and a lover of God. To honor his memory and with his family’s blessing, a memorial t-shirt has been created featuring the cover of Ian’s Art 2 sketchbook. A local company is handling orders, importantly, not for profit, ensuring the effort remains a heartfelt tribute.
In this time of sadness, Ian’s story is one of remarkable compassion. His final gift and the vibrant spirit recalled by his friends remind us that even in the briefest of lives, a legacy of laughter, love, and generosity can make an everlasting difference.
