Aurora Police Arrest Man Following Reckless Discharge Investigation

Aurora, IL – The Aurora Police Department announced the arrest of a 23-year-old man after an investigation into the reckless discharge of a firearm on April 1, 2026.

The incident began at approximately 8:27 p.m. when officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Jackson Street following a ShotSpotter alert indicating multiple rounds fired. Upon arrival, police confirmed evidence of gunfire. Through a swift canvass of the area, officers developed information that an individual had fired a weapon into the ground before entering a nearby residence.

Police made contact at that location, where they located firearms and gathered evidence consistent with the reported incident. This led to the identification and peaceful arrest of the suspect.

Jovanny Rodriguez, of Aurora, was transported for further investigation. Following a case review, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized one count of Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, a Class 4 Felony.

Chief Matt Thomas emphasized the role of technology in the response. “This is exactly why this type of specialized technology matters — it helps officers respond quickly, locate evidence, and take action,” he stated. “While no people or property were struck by gunfire in this case, that does not make this behavior harmless. Every round fired creates risk, and we will continue to hold those accountable who put our community in danger.”

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Aurora Police Department’s Investigations Division at (630) 256-5500.

Charges are not proof of guilt. All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
