Champion of progressive Brunswick Dies At 85,In Loving Memory Of Gil Freeman

Gil Freeman, a towering figure in the development of a progressive and environmentally conscious Brunswick in the late-20th century, passed away last week at the age of 85.

His legacy is woven into the very fabric of the inner-northern suburb. In the early 1980s, he was instrumental in transforming an old tip on the banks of the Merri Creek into CERES, the renowned urban farm and environmental park in Brunswick East—a beacon of community sustainability.

His commitment to the local environment began even earlier. As chairman of the Brunswick Community Group in the mid-1970s, Freeman galvanised residents to clean up the Merri Creek and its surrounds, turning a neglected waterway into the cherished community asset it is today. His passion for alternative education also saw him co-found and become the first principal of the Sydney Road Community School in 1972.

After moving to South Gippsland with his wife Meredith in the 1990s, he continued his ethos through a successful organic farming business. His lifelong service to conservation and the environment was formally recognised with an Order of Australia Medal in 2023.

Gil Freeman died on March 25 after a short illness. He is remembered not just for his achievements, but as a true champion whose vision helped shape a greener, more connected, and progressive Brunswick. His foundational work continues to inspire new generations.
