Michelle Barker Martinsville, Virginia Obituary
The Martinsville community is grieving the loss of Michelle Barker, a beloved teacher and devoted mother, who passed away on April 1, 2026, at the age of 40 following a short illness.
Born on August 21, 1985, to Joy Brown Atkinson and the late Al Atkinson, Jr., Michelle was a lifelong resident whose faith and kindness became her hallmark. A member of Chatmoss Baptist Church, she lived out her calling with grace. After graduating from Laurel Park High School, she pursued her passion for education at Longwood University, earning her degree in 2009. She dedicated her career to Henry County Public Schools, where her classroom was more than a place of learning—it was a space where every student felt valued and encouraged.
Michelle’s vibrant spirit was woven into the fabric of the seasons. She cherished Halloween and Christmas, and her love for snowmen brightened many winter days. Summers were for beach trips and poolside relaxation. A sports enthusiast, she was a constant, cheering presence at her daughter Karli’s games.

Above all, Michelle will be remembered for her profound kindness and non-judgmental heart. She made everyone feel welcome, leaving a legacy of faith and love etched into the hearts of her family, countless friends, colleagues, and students.
She is survived by her mother, Joy; her daughter, Karli Barker (Logan Fontaine); brothers Steven (Tabitha) and Gregory (Ryan) Atkinson; several nieces, nephews, extended family, and a wide circle of close friends.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM on Monday, April 6, 2026, at Wright Funeral Service Martinsville Chapel, with interment following at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Wright Funeral Service & Crematory is serving the family. In Michelle’s memory, her community is left with the enduring lesson she lived by: to lead with love in all things.
